Vernon Beetle Trap

TheVernon Beetle Trap is effective for capturing two wireworm (click beetle) species, Agriotes lineatus and A. obscurus.  Adults are attracted to an internal pheromone lure and fall into the trap after ascending a shallow ramp.  The narrow opening restricts entry by larger insects.  No kill agent or preservative needed.  Regular servicing will provide specimens in good condition.

Sticky boards are an option when trapping other species.  In addition, the trap opening can be widened to capture larger crawling beetles.

Lure Instillation
Lures are hung inside the trap.  Fold excess plastic over on itself and slide the lure into the slot located on the inner wall of the ramps.Always wear disposable gloves when handling lures to avoid lure contamination and cross contamination (or, wash well hands before handling different lures).

Field Placement
If the soil is compact, scrape or hoe to soften, then set the traps so that the flat ledge of the ramps are just below the soil surface.  Space traps baited with different lures by 5 meters.  To check traps for beetle capture, open by pulling one of the ramps out, dump the insects into a bag or other container, count and dispose.

Caution:  Plastic can adsorb pheromone.  Avoid cross contamination of traps with different lures.  Use a permanent marker to identify which lure to use in each trap. Do not interchange traps with different lures.
